Something is going on that YOU need to be aware of, and I am sure that many of the people that visit this site already know this, but just in case I think it needs to be said. Recently several ISP's have begun to make noises that they want Google to pay them to keep a decent speed internet connection to their users. I have referenced this in the past here but recent developments make it even more interesting.
The Washington Post article is the best quick brief on the issue. The real issue here is pure and utter greed. Let me put the situation in layman's terms as best I can: You pay for bandwidth from your ISP ( Comcast, AT&T, Rogers, Cox, Pacific, etc) and your contract usually specifies unlimited transfer. Google pays for every bit of data it uploads to anyone downloading the information. So at the current time, when you download a picture, video, or do a search on Google you pay for it and so does Google. The Telephone and Cable companies get to charge both parties, treating it like wireless phones where the caller and called both pay.
This is not enough for the greedy F**ks at Verizon. John Thorne, a Verizon senior vice president said, “It (Google) is enjoying a free lunch that should, by any rational account, be the lunch of the facilities providers.” Let me give you the real world translation of what this greedy company is saying, “We do not want anyone making money unless it is us because providing service that is second rate to many third world countries and dramatically overcharging their users for it is NOT ENOUGH.” What they are doing is equal to the phone company going to anyone who does phone sales and demanding a percentage. Here's another analogy, if I order from Newegg.com using bandwidth both Newegg and I already pay for, Verizon thinks they should demand a cut of the sale.
I think the execs at Verizon and these other providers are watching too many Soprano's episodes, because what they are trying to do is charge protection money and extort it from legitimate businesses. Contact your congressmen and tell them that you want net neutrality to stay as it is, and you will not vote for anyone that waters down the Telecommunications Act of 1996. Failure to do so will result in you paying more for your internet access. It is not bad enough that people in the Yukon have better net connections than people in downtown Chicago! Don't let our government make another anti-consumer stupid call.
Actually what is really ironic is companies usually PAY people to provide services to thier customers if it is a service people want… Verizon is no different. They will pay people to put stuff up on thier cell network that people can access to attract them to Verizon over say Cingular. However Google… one of the bigger attractors on the internet they want to charge… here is why….
Google is free. Free is the key… see Verizon, Cingular, Sprint, etc they ALL have Google.
If Google said “tell ya what… we ain't paying anybody anything… you pay our bill and we will lock access down to just your customers” the tables would turn…. and Verizon would be paying for Google rather than Google paying Verizon.
Ain't life stupid?
